General Description

Persicaria (or Polygonum) sp. 'Kawagoeanum', also known as Polygonum sp. 'Pink', is a relatively new aquarium plant. It belongs to the Polygonaceae family and is classified under the genus Persicaria. This plant originates from East Asia, with its exact species not definitively confirmed, possibly being Persicaria kawagoeana (=Polygonum kawagoeanum). It is versatile, capable of thriving both above and below the waterline, making it suitable for emersed as well as submersed cultivation.

Aquarium Suitability

Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is considered a suitable plant for aquariums, although it may not be the best choice for low-tech setups. It is more popular among experienced aquarists due to its demands for strong lighting and specific water parameters, making it less common in pet stores and online shops.

Demands and Hardiness

The cultivation of Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is not overly challenging given that its basic requirements are met. It thrives under strong light conditions provided by metal halide, compact, or T5 lamps to enhance its striking pink-orange coloration. Additionally, maintaining high levels of CO2, phosphate, iron, and a light color temperature of 6500-8000 Kelvin is recommended for optimal growth. This plant benefits from regular pruning to prevent the loss of lower leaves under strong lighting.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' serves as a vibrant accent plant, adding pops of color to the aquarium. It can be utilized as a background or midground plant, especially in Japanese-style Nature Aquarium layouts, where its bushy growth pattern complements the design. When combined with plants like Cyperus helferi, it creates visually appealing aquascapes.

Propagation

Propagation of Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is commonly done through cuttings, making it relatively straightforward for aquarists to multiply and maintain in their tanks. This method allows for the easy expansion of plant stock and the rejuvenation of existing specimens.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in wet habitats like bogs, ditches, and riverbanks, Persicaria sp. 'Kawagoeanum' is native to East Asia. Its adaptability to different environments and the ability to grow both submerged and emerged contribute to its widespread distribution among hobbyists and aquatic plant enthusiasts.
