General Description
Microsorum pteropus "Trident," also known as Microsorum pteropus 'Fingers,' is an uncommon Java fern variation believed to originate from Sarawak, Borneo. The distinctive feature of this plant is its leaves, which exhibit 2-5 frontal lobes on each side, with narrow middle and lateral lobes reminiscent of the Java fern 'Needle Leaf.'
Aquarium Suitability
Highly suitable for aquariums, the Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' is classified as very easy to maintain. It thrives in environments with carbon dioxide levels ranging between 10-40mg/l, low to high lighting, and a pH balance of 5-7.5. For detailed demands and hardiness, refer to the table provided.
Demands and Hardiness (see table)
The plant grows slowly and is ideal for midground placement in aquariums. It belongs to the family Polypodiaceae and prefers temperatures between 20-28°C. While it can tolerate temperatures between 4-30°C, it is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.
Aquascaping & Usage
Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' serves as an epiphyte, commonly attaching itself to hardscape structures within aquariums. Its unique appearance makes it a visually appealing addition to aquascapes, particularly in midground areas where its intricate leaves can be showcased.
Propagation
Propagation of Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' can be achieved through various methods, including proliferating leaves, proliferating roots, rhizome division, and cutting off daughter plants. These techniques enable aquarists to expand their plant population and enhance the overall aesthetic of their aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Typically found in aquatic habitats, the Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' thrives in regions with temperatures ranging from 20-28°C. While its precise distribution is linked to locations like Sarawak in Borneo, this Java fern variety has acclimated well to aquarium environments worldwide.
