General Description

The red-stemmed form of Eichhornia azurea (S.W.) Kunth, also known as Eichhornia azurea (rotstängelige Form), is a lesser-known aquatic plant in the hobby. Often mistaken for Eichhornia heterosperma, it stands out with its frilly-petaled flowers, yellow spot on the uppermost petal, and an inflorescence bearing many flowers. The submersed form of this plant is distinguishable by its intensely wine-red stems, making it a captivating sight in large aquariums.

Aquarium Suitability

Eichhornia azurea is rarely commercially available but can be sourced from other aquarists. With a medium level of difficulty, this plant thrives in temperatures ranging from 15-24°C. It is suitable for semi-emersed growth in open tanks and can be positioned in the background, midground, or on the water surface.

Demands and Hardiness

This plant demands medium to high lighting, carbon dioxide levels between 20-40mg/l, and a pH range of 5-7.5. It can tolerate temperatures between 6-33°C and requires a nitrate level of 10-50mg/l, phosphates of 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels between 5-30mg/l.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquariums, Eichhornia azurea serves as a striking solitary plant or in informal groups. Its floating sprouts with spoon-shaped leaves can enhance the aesthetics of open tanks, especially when provided with ample light and macronutrients to encourage the growth of its large, light blue-purple flowers.

Propagation

Propagation of Eichhornia azurea can be achieved through cuttings. Given the right conditions, this plant can be multiplied to expand its presence within an aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

Belonging to the family Pontederiaceae and the order Commelinales, Eichhornia azurea is a fast-growing seed plant native to specific habitats. Its habitat and distribution remain largely understudied, contributing to its rarity within commercial availability.
