General Description
Eichhornia diversifolia, commonly known as Variableleaf water hyacinth, is a fast-growing aquatic plant that can be found submerged or with floating leaves in tropical waters of Central and South America. It is known for forming vast zones of floating leaves in rivers and, under optimal conditions, can develop into a bushy plant with palm-like stems. It requires strong lighting, CO2 fertilization, as well as adequate levels of nitrate, phosphate, iron, and micronutrients to thrive.
Aquarium Suitability
Eichhornia diversifolia is suitable for aquariums and is categorized as a plant with medium difficulty. It is compatible with a variety of water conditions, and when provided with the necessary care, it can serve as an attractive accent in the middle or background of an aquarium setting.
Demands and Hardiness
To cultivate E. diversifolia successfully in an aquarium, it requires at least 0.75 watts per liter of strong lighting and CO2 fertilization for robust stem growth. Adequate levels of nitrate (5-20 mg/l) and phosphate (1-2 mg/l) are crucial for its health, along with sufficient iron and micronutrients for maintaining its dark green color. The plant is intolerant to shady areas and requires proper nutrient levels to prevent leaf shedding and blackening.
Aquascaping & Usage
E. diversifolia can be used as a background or midground plant in aquariums to add visual interest and depth to the tank. Its long, robust shoots and bushy growth make it a striking addition to aquascapes, resembling its close relative, Heteranthera zosterifolia. The plant can produce ovate floating leaves and beautiful blue flowers when allowed to grow towards the water surface.
Propagation
Propagation of E. diversifolia is primarily through cuttings, where lateral shoots can be trimmed and replanted in the substrate to promote new growth. This method allows for the easy expansion of the plant within an aquarium environment.
Habitat and Distribution
Naturally found in Central and South America, Eichhornia diversifolia thrives in tropical waters with temperatures ranging from 20-28°C. It prefers waters with a pH level between 5-7 and can tolerate temperatures from 18-35°C but is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates.
