General Description

Water stargrass (Heteranthera dubia) is a fast-growing aquatic plant native to the southeast of the USA down to Central America. It thrives in stagnant or slow-flowing water bodies, either submerged or floating on the surface. The plant has light green leaves that resemble grass and produces small yellow flowers with six narrow bracts, giving it the common name "water stargrass."

Aquarium Suitability

Water stargrass is well-suited for aquariums, particularly for beginner planted tank enthusiasts and fishkeepers. It is undemanding in terms of water quality and can adapt to various conditions, making it versatile in different tank setups. Its availability in the trade may vary, but it can be obtained from commercial sources or other hobbyists.

Demands and Hardiness

Water stargrass is a very easy plant to care for and grows rapidly. It can tolerate a wide range of water parameters, including a pH of 5-8, soft water conditions, and moderate to high lighting. Carbon dioxide (CO2) supplementation is not necessary but can enhance its growth rate. It thrives in temperatures between 15-27°C and does well even in coldwater tanks.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquariums, water stargrass is best planted in groups to create a lush appearance. If the plant grows too long and starts floating at the surface, trimming the top shoot and replanting it is a simple way to propagate it. Additionally, cuttings from lateral shoots can be taken for propagation. Emersed cultivation is also feasible, resulting in a more compact growth form.

Propagation

Water stargrass can be propagated through cuttings, allowing hobbyists to easily expand their plant population. Regular pruning and replanting of trimmed shoots help maintain the desired size and shape in the aquarium.

Habitat and Distribution

In its natural habitat, Heteranthera dubia thrives in shallow, slow-flowing water bodies in the USA to Central America. It can be found growing either submerged or floating on the water's surface. Although primarily an aquatic plant, it can be cultivated emersed with success, exhibiting a more compact growth pattern.
