General Description

Barbula sp., a cushion-forming moss, was introduced to Europe from Asia and gained recognition in aquaristics through Armin Piątkowski (Poland). Identified as a species of the genus Barbula by Prof. Benito C. Tan (Singapore) in 2007, the exact species remains undetermined due to its unknown origins. Mosses of the genus Barbula are globally distributed, with around 200 species inhabiting soil or rocks. The plant features shoots over 2.5 cm long, with dense obovate-lanceolate leaves that have a distinct midrib extending to the acute leaf tip. Leaf cells are arranged longitudinally parallel to the midrib, varying in shape from rectangular to hexagonal.

Aquarium Suitability

Barbula sp. is occasionally available commercially and is designated as aquarium-compatible. Its growth is slow, and it is suitable for nano tanks as an epiphyte on hardscape, often utilized in the foreground and group plantings.

Demands and Hardiness

Barbula sp. thrives in water conditions with low to high lighting, a temperature range of 18-25°C, and a pH level of 5-7.5. It requires carbon dioxide levels of 10-40mg/l, carbonate hardness of 0-14, iron concentration of 0.01-0.5mg/l, nitrate levels of 10-50mg/l, phosphate levels of 0.1-3mg/l, and potassium levels of 5-30mg/l.

Aquascaping & Usage

In aquascaping, Barbula sp. can be used to create a cushion-like growth habit. It serves as an attractive addition to nano tanks, especially in foreground layouts and when grouped with other plants.

Propagation

Propagation of Barbula sp. can be achieved through splitting or by cutting off daughter plants, making it relatively easy to reproduce in aquarium setups.

Habitat and Distribution

The exact habitat and distribution of Barbula sp. remain uncertain, with possible origins in Asia. However, some species within the genus Barbula, like Barbula convoluta, are found growing in cracks on pavements and old city walls in Europe, indicating adaptability to diverse environments.
