General Description
Riccia fluitans, commonly known as Crystalwort, is a floating aquatic plant belonging to the Riccia genus of the Ricciaceae family. This fast-growing plant is a cosmopolitan species found worldwide. A favorite among plant aquarists, Riccia fluitans was popularized by Takashi Amano for its versatile use in aquascaping, both submerged and floating.
Aquarium Suitability
Crystalwort is highly suitable for aquariums, thriving in various water conditions. It can be kept as a floating plant or attached to rocks and wood in the aquarium. When cultivated submerged, it requires more light and CO2 supplementation compared to floating growth.
Demands and Hardiness
Riccia fluitans is considered an easy-to-cultivate plant and can tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions. It adapts well to varying water hardness levels, pH values, and temperatures. As a floating plant, it does not demand high light intensity or CO2 supplementation but requires a nutrient-rich environment with adequate nitrate, phosphate, iron, and potassium levels.
Aquascaping & Usage
In aquascaping, Riccia fluitans is valued for its fine-leaved appearance and fast growth. It can be used to create lush carpets in the foreground or midground of an aquarium, adding warmth and natural beauty. The plant is also suitable for use as a floating cover for small fish larvae and bubble nest builders like gouramis.
Propagation
Propagation of Crystalwort can be easily achieved through fragmentation, splitting, or cutting off daughter plants. This plant's rapid growth makes it ideal for quickly establishing greenery in the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to various regions globally, Riccia fluitans is commonly found floating on the surfaces of freshwater bodies. Its adaptability to different habitats has contributed to its widespread distribution. The plant is known to tolerate colder temperatures, making it a hardy choice for aquariums.
