General Description

Salvinia molesta, commonly known as Kariba weed, is a fast-growing aquatic fern belonging to the Salviniaceae family. It is related to S. auriculata and is believed to have originated from hybridization events involving various South American Salvinia species. This plant has become widespread in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, primarily due to human activities, often establishing itself as an invasive aquatic weed.

Aquarium Suitability

Salvinia molesta is frequently available commercially for aquarium and pond enthusiasts. It is often sold under the incorrect name Salvinia natans, a different species native to Europe and Asia. Despite its ease of availability, the true S. natans is rare in trade due to its endangered status. This plant is categorized as easy in terms of difficulty, making it suitable for hobbyists of various experience levels.

Demands and Hardiness

The plant thrives in medium to high light conditions and requires a temperature range of 24-28°C, showing tolerance to temperatures between 10-32°C. Salvinia molesta can adapt to a pH range of 5-8 and moderate to high levels of nitrates, carbon dioxide, phosphates, iron, and potassium in the water. However, it is unsuitable for outdoor use in colder climates due to its lack of winter hardiness.

Aquascaping & Usage

Salvinia molesta is a free-floating fern that primarily occupies the water surface. With its intricate hairy leaf surface distinguishing it from similar species, this plant adds texture and interest to aquascapes. In outdoor ponds, it can provide shade and cover for aquatic organisms while aiding in water quality management.

Propagation

Propagation of S. molesta is easily achieved through fragmentation, splitting, or detaching daughter plants. This fast-growing fern can rapidly colonize suitable environments, making it important to monitor and manage its growth in aquarium settings.

Habitat and Distribution

Believed to have originated from hybridization events in Brazil, Salvinia molesta has since spread globally, establishing populations in warmer regions. In Central Europe, it is found in nutrient-rich, relatively warm waters, like cut-off meanders of rivers. Its adaptability and rapid growth have enabled it to thrive in various aquatic habitats, contributing to its classification as an invasive species in many regions.
