General Description

The Powder Blue Tang, scientifically known as Acanthurus leucosternon, belongs to the Acanthuridae family. This species, native to the East Indian Ocean and Indonesia, can grow up to 30 cm in size. They are delicate fish that mimic Angelfish as juveniles to evade predators, making them challenging to identify from adult images.

Aquarium Suitability

The Powder Blue Tang is suitable for experienced aquarists willing to provide the preparation and extra care it demands. They are aggressive towards similar species and require a tank of at least 900 litres due to their high demands for water quality and space.

Demands

This species requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of algae for grazing. They are highly sensitive during transportation, necessitating careful acclimatization. Providing hiding places upon introduction and ensuring proper oxygenation of water are crucial for their care.

Reef Suitability

Powder Blue Tangs are always considered reef safe as they rarely bother corals or invertebrates. However, caution is advised when adding multiple aggressive Acanthurus species or Zebrasoma xanthurum to the same tank.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for the Powder Blue Tang, make sure to include ample hiding spots, algae-covered rocks for grazing, and sufficient swimming space. Maintaining high water quality with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is essential.

Behaviour

These fish spend most of their time swimming and nibbling on algae. They establish hierarchies if kept in groups and may exhibit aggressive behavior towards docile species. Adequate feeding, hiding places, and space can help mitigate their aggression.

Feeding and Diet

Powder Blue Tangs primarily feed on macroalgae like seaweed and nori, microalgae such as spirulina, and small crustaceans like krill and mysis. Ensuring their diet is algae-based and supplemented with other nutritious foods is vital for their well-being.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Powder Blue Tangs are found in the Indian Ocean from eastern Africa to the Andaman Sea, southwest Indonesia, and Christmas Island. Their distribution extends to Bali, Indonesia, in the Western Pacific. These fish predominantly inhabit areas rich in algae where they can graze and swim freely.
