General Description
The Chevron Tang, scientifically known as Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis, belongs to the Acanthuridae family and is part of the Bristletooth Tang genus (Ctenochaetus). These fish are characterized by special teeth that allow them to feed on algae and scrape organic material from rocks and stones. While not as vibrant in color as some other Surgeonfish, they are peaceful and less active, making them suitable for smaller aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability
The Chevron Tang, though not as colorful as other Surgeonfish, is a peaceful species, making it suitable for marine aquariums. It is essential to provide ample sand and rocks for grazing and hiding places when introducing them into the tank. They are not aggressive but may not fare well with more aggressive Surgeonfish species.
Demands, Care and Hardiness
With an average level of hardiness, the Chevron Tang thrives in well-established aquariums with plenty of algae on rocks and stones. Their primary diet should be algae-based, supplemented with frozen foods. When initially introduced, they require hiding places and a tank size of at least 400 liters to accommodate their swimming habits.
Reef Suitability
The Chevron Tang is reef-safe and generally compatible with coral aquariums. They help maintain algae levels in the tank without posing a threat to corals or invertebrates. However, caution is advised when housing them with aggressive species like large Palettes/Blue tangs.
Aquarium Setup
A well-run aquarium with abundant algae for grazing is essential for the Chevron Tang. Providing plant-based fish flakes, Nori seaweed, or similar algae-rich foods ensures their nutritional needs are met. Maintaining water parameters with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and specific gravity between 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
These fish spend most of their time swimming and grazing on algae. They are generally peaceful but may exhibit aggression towards similar species if not introduced carefully into the aquarium hierarchy.
Feeding and Diet
The Chevron Tang feeds on macroalgae like seaweed or Nori as well as microalgae such as spirulina. Maintaining a diet rich in algae is vital for their immune system health and overall well-being.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the Pacific Ocean, the Chevron Tang is native to various regions across Oceania, including Micronesia, the Hawaiian Islands, and Pitcairn Island. It thrives in sandy and rocky environments where it can graze on algae and organic matter.
