General Description
The Naso Tang, scientifically known as Naso lituratus, belongs to the Acanthuridae family. Commonly referred to as Striped-faced unicornfish, Clown tang, Orangesine unicornfish, or Pacific orange-spine unicorn, this species can grow up to 50cm in size. Native to the Pacific Ocean from Japan to Australia, this Surgeonfish species demands large aquariums with ample swimming space due to its size and need for activity.
Aquarium Suitability
The Naso Tang is suitable for aquariums with care, deemed delicate in terms of hardiness. It is crucial to choose a healthy individual when purchasing, ensuring good behavior, activity levels, and a normal appearance. While peaceful towards other Surgeonfish, it may exhibit aggression towards similar species, leading to hierarchy establishment in multi-Surgeonfish setups.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
This species thrives on algae-based diets, requiring a constant supply for optimal health. They are effective algae-eaters, mainly consuming microalgae and small crustaceans. Naso Tangs may refrain from eating initially when introduced to a new environment but typically start feeding within a week. They can scratch acrylic and glass with their scalpel-like appendage and are prone to jumping out of open aquariums.
Reef Suitability
The Naso Tang is considered reef-safe, rarely causing disturbances to corals or invertebrates within the tank. However, caution should be exercised with larger, more aggressive individuals that might pose a threat.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Naso Tang, a well-established aquarium with ample hiding spots and space for swimming is necessary. The tank should be equipped with sufficient algae growth on rocks for grazing purposes. Water conditions should be maintained within the ranges of pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12, temperature 22.2-25.6°C, and specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.
Behaviour
This species spends most of its time swimming around the aquarium, grazing on algae from rocks and stones. Naso Tangs may engage in minor territorial behaviors but are generally peaceful within a suitable environment.
Feeding and Diet
The primary diet of the Naso Tang consists of macroalgae like seaweed or nori, supplemented with occasional frozen foods. Ensuring a varied diet rich in algae content is crucial for maintaining the fish's immune system and overall well-being.
Habitat and Distribution
Naso Tangs are found in the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Japan to Australia and eastwards to French Polynesia. They inhabit reefs and coastal areas abundant in algae, where they can graze and thrive in their natural habitat.
