General Description

The Bluespine unicornfish, scientifically known as Naso unicornis, belongs to the Acanthuridae family, commonly referred to as Surgeonfish. These fish are endemic to the Indo-Pacific region, with their distribution ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian islands and southern Japan. They are characterized by their large size, with adults reaching up to 70cm, and possess a distinctive scalpel-like spine near their caudal fin, used for defense.

Aquarium Suitability

Bluespine unicornfish are deemed suitable for aquariums with proper care. However, due to their significant adult size and need for swimming space, they demand a very large tank. They thrive best in a well-established aquarium with ample algae growth on rocks for grazing. Providing hiding spots among live rocks is essential. It is crucial to ensure they have a supply of algae-based food in their diet to maintain optimal health and immune function.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

These unicornfish have an average hardiness level and are generally peaceful towards other species of Surgeonfish in the aquarium. When selecting a Bluespine unicornfish from a pet store, it is advised to choose a healthy and active specimen that displays normal behavior and adequate body condition. Acquiring a specimen that is already feeding can help prevent potential challenges. Large Naso Surgeonfish may occasionally scrape acrylic or glass surfaces due to the growth of their prominent spines.

Bluespine unicornfish are considered reef-safe and are unlikely to cause harm to coral or invertebrates in a typical reef setup.
