General Description:

The Yellow Tang, scientifically known as Zebrasoma flavescens, is a vibrant member of the Surgeonfish family Acanthuridae. This species stands out in coral aquariums with its striking yellow coloration and distinctive sail-like fin. They are generally peaceful but can display aggression, particularly towards other Zebrasoma species like Zebrasoma xanthurum.

Aquarium Suitability:

Yellow Tangs are suitable for most aquarium setups but may exhibit aggression towards similar species, so caution is advised when introducing multiple tangs of the same genus. They require a well-established tank with ample space for swimming and grazing on algae-covered rocks.

Demands:

This species is hardy and thrives in water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. They prefer a tank size of at least 250 liters and require hiding spots, especially when first introduced to the aquarium.

Care and Hardiness:

Yellow Tangs are known for their resilience and adaptability, making them a popular choice for hobbyists. They primarily feed on algae but can also consume small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, and artemia. A diet rich in algae-based foods is essential for their overall health and immune system.

Reef Suitability:

Yellow Tangs are reef safe and rarely bother corals or invertebrates. They contribute to the ecosystem by keeping algae growth in check, making them beneficial additions to reef aquariums.

Aquarium Setup:

To create an ideal environment for Yellow Tangs, provide a well-maintained tank with plenty of live rock and algae for grazing. Ensure sufficient hiding places and establish a peaceful hierarchy if multiple tang species are kept together.

Behaviour:

In the aquarium, Yellow Tangs are active swimmers that spend their time exploring and feeding on algae. They may exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards conspecifics or closely related species.

Feeding and Diet:

These tangs require a diet that includes macroalgae like seaweed or nori, as well as microalgae such as spirulina. While they enjoy various frozen foods, maintaining a primary focus on algae-based nutrition is crucial for their well-being.

Habitat and Distribution:

Yellow Tangs are native to the Central and West Pacific Ocean, inhabiting regions such as the Ryukyu, Mariana, Marshall, Marcus, Wake, and Hawaiian islands. They can also be found off the coast of Florida in the Western Central Atlantic, contributing to the biodiversity of coral reef ecosystems.
