General Description
The Mediterranean cardinalfish (Apogon imberbis) is a member of the Apogonidae family, characterized by diverse shapes and colors. They have sizeable mouths and robust appetites, usually thriving on Artemia, Mysis, and krill. These nocturnal creatures often seek refuge during the day among rocks, SPS corals, and sometimes even within anemones or Sea urchins' spines.
Aquarium Suitability
With an average hardiness level, these fish are recommended for aquariums but are known to potentially pose a threat to smaller fish and crustaceans like shrimp. They have a proclivity for cooler waters, with optimal temperatures ranging between 18-21°C (64-70°F). They can be kept in numbers ranging from single specimens to groups, provided there is ample space.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
The Mediterranean cardinalfish is a docile species suitable for specialized aquariums. They exhibit a secretive nature, preferring to hide among rocks and displaying enhanced activity in dim or dark conditions. During transportation and acclimatization, they can be particularly sensitive. Behaviour
While generally peaceful towards other fish, they may exhibit aggression towards similar species if space or food resources are insufficient. Some species may form small shoals, contributing to an interesting dynamic within the aquarium.
Feeding and Diet
Their diet primarily consists of small crustaceans like krill, Mysis, and Artemia, supplemented with zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods.
