General Description
Cooks cardinalfish, scientifically known as Ostorhinchus cookii, is a member of the Apogonidae family, commonly referred to as cardinalfish. These fish exhibit various shapes and colors, making them visually appealing additions to aquariums. They have a large mouth and a robust appetite, mainly feeding on Artemia, Mysis, and krill.
Aquarium Suitability
Cooks cardinalfish are generally well-suited for most aquariums. They may display aggression towards smaller fish and crustaceans within the tank due to their predatory nature. Providing hiding spots among live rocks is essential to help them feel secure in their environment.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
These fish are considered hardy and can thrive in aquarium conditions. They require water parameters with a pH level between 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Reef Suitability
Cooks cardinalfish are known to be reef-safe and can coexist peacefully in a reef tank environment. They are not known to cause harm to corals or other invertebrates typically found in reef setups.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Cooks cardinalfish, it is crucial to provide ample hiding spaces like live rocks and caves. They prefer dim lighting as they are nocturnal creatures and tend to be more active during low light conditions.
Behaviour
These fish are generally peaceful towards other tank mates but may engage in conflicts amongst themselves if space or food is limited. They sometimes form small shoals, especially when sufficient space allows for natural behavior.
Feeding and Diet
Cooks cardinalfish have a diverse diet that includes small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton like Cyclops and pods. In aquarium settings, they are opportunistic feeders and will consume a variety of foods.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Oman to regions as far as Japan, the Great Barrier Reef, and New Caledonia, Cooks cardinalfish prefer habitats with abundant hiding spots and moderate lighting conditions. They are known to thrive in various locations ranging from Australia to Central/West Pacific waters.
