General Description
Seale's cardinalfish, also known as Cheek-bar cardinalfish, belong to the Apogonidae family and can be found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from Malaysia to the Solomon Islands. These cardinalfish come in various shapes and colors, generally well-suited for aquarium life. They have a large mouth and a hearty appetite, primarily feeding on Artemia, Mysis, and krill. In the aquarium, they are versatile eaters, consuming a variety of foods. While generally peaceful, they can pose a threat to small shrimps and fish due to their predatory nature. They can be kept together if given enough space.
Aquarium Suitability
Seale's cardinalfish are considered suitable for most aquarium setups, thriving best when kept as pairs or in small groups. They are docile and may not fare well when housed with more aggressive tank mates. Adequate hiding spots, such as among live rocks, are essential for this species due to its shy nature.
Care and Hardiness
With an average hardiness level, Seale's cardinalfish prefer water conditions with a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, pH of 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. They require a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 and a minimum tank size of 100 liters to thrive. Known for their docile temperament, these fish can be a peaceful addition to a community aquarium.
Reef Suitability
Seale's cardinalfish are known to be reef-compatible and are considered safe for reef environments, making them a popular choice for reef aquarium enthusiasts.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Seale's cardinalfish, it is essential to provide hiding places, like live rocks, to help them feel secure. Maintaining water parameters within the specified range and ensuring a peaceful tank environment are crucial for the well-being of these fish.
Behaviour
These cardinalfish are known to be shy and often seek hiding places during the day. They may form small shoals and generally coexist peacefully with other fish, but territorial disputes can arise if space or food is limited in the tank.
Feeding and Diet
Seale's cardinalfish primarily feed on small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and Artemia. They also consume zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Offering a varied diet will help ensure their nutritional needs are met in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Seale's cardinalfish can be found in the waters of the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from Malaysia to the Solomon Islands, and extending north to southern Japan and south to northwestern Australia. Their natural habitat includes coral reefs and rocky areas where they seek shelter and forage for food.
