General Description
The Luminous Cardinalfish, scientifically known as Rhabdamia gracilis, is a member of the Apogonidae family, characterized by its transparent body and bioluminescent organs. These fish can be kept in large shoals in captivity but are susceptible to predation by other fish due to their delicate nature.
Aquarium Suitability
Cardinalfish, including the Luminous Cardinalfish, are generally well suited for aquarium environments. They have a large mouth and hearty appetite, primarily feeding on Artemia, Mysis, and krill. It is crucial to consider their feeding habits when housed with other fish, as they may consume small shrimps and fish. These fish are typically peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior if space or food is limited. They are nocturnal creatures and tend to hide during the day, preferring spots between rocks, SPS corals, anemones, or Sea urchin spines.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
The Luminous Cardinalfish has an average hardiness level and requires a tank size of at least 200 liters. It is best kept in shoals and should be housed with peaceful tank mates, as they are shy and docile. Providing ample hiding places, such as live rocks, enhances their well-being in the aquarium environment.
Reef Suitability
Luminous Cardinalfish are classified as always reef safe, making them an excellent choice for reef aquariums without posing a threat to coral or other reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, maintain water conditions within the following parameters: a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12, a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C. Ensure the aquarium has ample hiding spots and adequate space for the fish to move freely.
Behaviour
These docile fish prefer to stay hidden during the day and become more active at night. They exhibit peaceful behavior towards other tank occupants but may engage in skirmishes if resources are limited.
Feeding and Diet
Luminous Cardinalfish primarily feed on small crustaceans such as Krill, Mysis, and Artemia, as well as zooplankton like Cyclops and pods. They have voracious appetites and will consume a variety of food offered in the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the Indo-West Pacific region from East Africa to the Marshall Islands and New Guinea, north to Japan, and south to Australia, including the Arafura Sea, the Luminous Cardinalfish inhabits a wide geographical range in marine environments.
