General Description
The Flame Cardinalfish, or Flamefish, features a vibrant red hue accented with light touches of blue and green, belonging to the Apogonidae family with the species classified under Apogon spp. These fish can grow up to 10.2 cm in size.
Aquarium Suitability
With its fiery colors, the Flame Cardinalfish makes a stunning addition to aquariums of at least 30 gallons. They thrive in environments with caves for hiding and prefer peaceful tank mates due to their aggressive behavior towards other Cardinalfish. While they can exist in mated pairs, keeping them in large groups is discouraged. Flame Cardinalfish are nocturnal creatures and can be observed under a red light.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Considered easy to care for, these Cardinalfish require a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins. Their carnivorous nature means they thrive on a menu of feeder shrimp, marine flesh, bloodworms, and occasionally live feeder fish. The Flame Cardinalfish typically prefers water conditions with a pH level of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.
Reef Suitability
Flame Cardinalfish are reef-compatible, making them a suitable choice for reef aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up their tank includes providing ample caves for hiding spots and creating a peaceful environment with suitable tank mates. The tank should mimic their natural habitat and offer spaces for them to roam and explore.
Behavior
These Cardinalfish are known for their slow and methodical swimming style. They exhibit aggressive behavior towards other Cardinalfish but can coexist well in mated pairs.
Feeding and Diet
Being carnivores, Flame Cardinalfish thrive on a diet of meaty foods such as feeder shrimp, marine flesh, and bloodworms. Depending on their size, they may also require live feeder fish as part of their dietary needs.
