General Description
The Five Lined Cardinalfish, scientifically known as Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus, is also commonly referred to as the Toothed Cardinalfish. Originating from the reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reefs of Fiji, these fish have a distinctive appearance. They feature a long and slender body shape, with an iridescent silver coloration. One of their most striking features is their large black striped eyes, complemented by a bright yellow and black spot near the tail, which aids in confusing potential predators about their orientation.
Aquarium Suitability
With a relatively easy care level, the Five Lined Cardinalfish is a suitable addition to aquariums. A tank size of 50 gallons or larger is recommended, providing ample space for these slow and methodical swimmers. It is advisable to include caves and peaceful tank mates in the aquarium setup to create a comfortable environment for the Cardinalfish. These fish tend to seek refuge in sea grass, other plants, or even use long-spined urchins for camouflage. In larger tanks of around 6 feet in length, a small group of Five Lined Cardinalfish can coexist peacefully, establishing a hierarchical order without displaying aggressiveness.
Care and Hardiness
The Five Lined Cardinalfish is considered easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. These fish are known for their peaceful temperament and can thrive in a well-maintained aquarium environment with stable water parameters. They prefer a diet rich in meaty foods such as feeder shrimp, flake foods, pellet foods, marine flesh, bloodworms, and occasionally live feeder fish.
Reef Suitability
Being reef-compatible, the Five Lined Cardinalfish can be housed in reef aquariums without posing a threat to corals or other reef inhabitants. Their behavior and feeding habits make them a suitable addition to a reef setup, adding both visual interest and diversity to the ecosystem.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Five Lined Cardinalfish, it is essential to provide ample hiding spots such as caves or dense vegetation to mimic their natural habitat. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH level between 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 72-78°F, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their well-being.
Behaviour
Five Lined Cardinalfish are known for their semi-aggressive temperament, especially within their own species when housed in groups. However, when kept in suitable tank setups with enough space and hiding spots, they generally exhibit peaceful behavior towards other tank mates.
Feeding and Diet
As carnivorous feeders, these fish primarily consume benthic crustaceans, zoobenthos, mobile invertebrates, and small fishes in their natural habitat. In captivity, they should be offered a varied diet consisting of meaty foods to ensure proper nutrition and health.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Five Lined Cardinalfish inhabit reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reefs of Fiji. They are commonly found in areas with abundant sea grass or other vegetation where they can seek shelter and camouflage themselves. This species' distribution is primarily limited to the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region.
