General Description
The Celebes Rainbow Group, scientifically known as Telmatherina ladigesi, is a peaceful schooling fish with a striking black coloration. The males of this species display vibrant colors, especially under natural lighting, and are characterized by an extended second dorsal and anal fin.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Celebes Rainbow, it is essential to provide a balance between planted areas and open spaces for swimming. Maintaining stable water conditions within the parameters of pH 7.0-7.5, temperature between 22.2-25.0°C, and a water hardness of 12-20 KH is crucial. A minimum tank size of 80 litres is recommended (see table).
Behaviour
Celebes Rainbows are known for their peaceful temperament, making them well-suited for community tanks. They are schooling fish, so it is advisable to keep them in groups to ensure their well-being and reduce stress.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Celebes Rainbows have large mouths but narrow throats. Their diet should consist of a variety of foods including prepared flakes, algae, and live foods. Providing small pieces of food is essential to accommodate their narrow throats efficiently.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
These fish spawn over moss or among plants, and the eggs typically hatch in about ten days. Once the fry have hatched, they can be fed prepared live foods or brine shrimp. Dimorphism is noticeable between males and females, with males exhibiting more vibrant colors and extended fins.
Habitat and Distribution
The Celebes Rainbow Group is native to the freshwater habitats of Indonesia, specifically in the waters around the island of Sulawesi. They can be found in rivers and lakes within this region, where they thrive in stable aquatic environments rich in plant life.
