General Description
The Hump-headed blenny, scientifically known as Blenniella gibbifrons, is a member of the Blenniidae family, characterized by an oblong shape and a long dorsal fin. This species is native to the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, East Pacific, New Zealand, and the Central/West Pacific. It can reach a maximum size of 12.0cm and is commonly referred to as the Hump-headed blenny or the Picture rockskipper in English.
Aquarium Suitability
The Hump-headed blenny is considered suitable for most aquariums due to its hardy nature and peaceful temperament, although it may display aggression towards similar species. It is reef-compatible and deemed safe for reef setups, particularly when well-fed. This species is known to nibble on soft corals and LPS if there is a lack of food present.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Known for its hardiness, the Hump-headed blenny thrives in aquariums with water conditions of pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C. To ensure optimal care, it is recommended to maintain a well-established aquarium where the blenny can graze on algae from rocks and stones. If algae is insufficient, regular feeding with algae-rich foods like Spirulina is essential.
Reef Suitability
The Hump-headed blenny is often considered reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums. When adequately fed, it poses no threat to the coral inhabitants and can contribute positively to the ecosystem by assisting in algae control.
Aquarium Setup
For a successful aquarium setup for the Hump-headed blenny, a minimum tank size of 300 liters is recommended to provide ample space for swimming and grazing. Incorporating rocks and stones with algae growth will mimic its natural habitat and ensure a consistent food source for the blenny. Regular water parameters monitoring and maintenance are vital for the well-being of this species.
Behaviour
This species is mostly peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior, particularly towards similar species. Its fun personality and unique behaviors make it a favorite among aquarists, despite its lack of vibrant coloration.
Feeding and Diet
The Hump-headed blenny has a diet that consists of small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. Supplementing its diet with Detritus and Microalgae like Spirulina will help maintain its health and vitality in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
The Hump-headed blenny is found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from East Africa to the Hawaiian, Line, and Ducie Islands, and north to Marcus Island. Its natural habitat includes rocky areas with algae growth where it can forage for food and seek shelter within crevices.
