General Description
The Red-streaked blenny, also known as the Reticulated blenny, Red-streaked eye-lash blenny, or Redstreaked blenny, belongs to the family Blenniidae - Cirripectes. These blennies are typically small, reaching a maximum size of around 10.0cm, with an oblong shape and a long dorsal fin. They are native to the waters of the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from Kenya south to Mozambique and throughout the Indian Ocean and western central Pacific to the Marshall and Samoan islands.
Aquarium Suitability
With care, the Red-streaked blenny is suitable for aquarium keeping. They are recommended to be kept in pairs, consisting of a male and a female. These fish thrive best in a well-established aquarium with ample algae for grazing. If natural algae sources are lacking, supplementing their diet with algae-rich foods like Spirulina is essential. The minimum tank size recommended for these blennies is 300 liters.
Care and Hardiness
This species is considered to have average hardiness and can adapt well to aquarium conditions. They are known to be reef-safe with caution and might exhibit aggressiveness towards food competitors in the tank. Maintaining stable water conditions within the parameters of pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12, salinity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C is crucial for their well-being.
Reef Suitability
Red-streaked blennies are considered reef-safe but should be introduced into a reef environment with caution due to their potential food aggression towards tank mates.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Red-streaked blennies, providing plenty of hiding spots among rocks and crevices is essential. Live rock with algae growth can help replicate their natural habitat and serve as a food source. A moderate water flow and appropriate lighting will also contribute to a suitable environment for these fish.
Behaviour
These blennies are known for their entertaining personalities, making them popular among aquarists. They may display territorial behaviors, especially towards other fish competing for food resources in the tank.
Feeding and Diet
Red-streaked blennies have a varied diet that includes macroalgae (such as seaweed or nori), microalgae (like spirulina), small crustaceans (krill, mysis, artemia), and zooplankton (such as cyclops and pods). Ensuring a diverse diet will help maintain their health and vibrancy.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Cirripectes stigmaticus can be found in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific regions. They prefer rocky reefs with algae growth, where they can graze and seek shelter.
