General Description
The Red Sea mimic blenny, scientifically known as Ecsenius gravieri, belongs to the Blenniidae family. These fish are characterized by their oblong shape, long dorsal fin, and small "legs" used for movement along the seabed. They typically do not grow very large, making them suitable for both small and large aquariums.
Aquarium Suitability
Red Sea mimic blennies are considered suitable for most aquariums due to their hardy nature and interesting personality. However, they tend to thrive better when kept as the sole specimen in the tank. They require a minimum tank size of 150 liters and prefer well-established aquariums with ample hiding spots, such as between live rocks.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
These blennies are deemed hardy and can adapt well to aquarium conditions. They are predominantly herbivores, with a primary diet based on algae. It is crucial to ensure a sufficient supply of algae-based food to maintain their immune system. While they enjoy a variety of frozen foods, their diet should primarily consist of plant-based flakes, Nori seaweed, or similar options.
Reef Suitability
Red Sea mimic blennies are often considered reef-safe, making them suitable for reef aquarium setups. However, they have been known to nibble at clams, including Tridacna species, posing a potential risk to certain reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up a tank for Red Sea mimic blennies, it is essential to provide ample hiding places like live rocks. Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, these blennies are found in the Western Indian Ocean, specifically from the Red Sea, including the Gulf of Aqaba, to the westernmost Gulf of Aden. Their natural habitat includes rocky areas where they can hide and graze on algae-rich surfaces.
