General Description
The Ecsenius trilineatus, commonly known as the Three-lined blenny, belongs to the Blenniidae family. These fish are popular in aquariums due to their ease of care and suitability for various tank sizes. They typically have an oblong shape with a long dorsal fin and are known for their small "legs" used to move around the tank bottom. Despite not being very colorful, they have a charming personality that appeals to many aquarists.
Aquarium Suitability
The Three-lined blenny is deemed suitable for most aquarium setups. They thrive best when kept in a well-established tank with ample hiding spots, such as live rocks. These fish are often recommended to be kept on their own as they may not fare well with other members of the same species due to territorial behavior.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Being hardy in nature, these blennies require a well-maintained aquarium environment with algae-rich surfaces for grazing. Their primary diet should consist of algae-based foods to maintain a healthy immune system. They are known to enjoy a varied diet of frozen foods but need a foundation of algae-based sustenance.
Reef Suitability
The Three-lined blenny is often considered reef-safe, making them compatible with reef setups, adding vibrancy and activity to the marine ecosystem within the tank.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up the aquarium for the Three-lined blenny should include ample hiding spaces, such as live rocks, and algae-covered surfaces for grazing. A tank of at least 50 liters in capacity is recommended to accommodate their needs.
Behaviour
These blennies are typically peaceful but can exhibit aggression towards similar species in the tank. They are known to have interesting and fun personalities that make them a delightful addition to aquariums.
Feeding and Diet
The recommended diet for Three-lined blennies includes macroalgae like seaweed and nori, microalgae such as spirulina, small crustaceans like krill and mysis, and zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. Ensuring a diverse diet will help maintain their health and vitality.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the Western Central Pacific, specifically the small islands in the Moluccas, New Guinea, and eastward to Florida Island in the Solomon Islands, these blennies are found in areas with access to algae-rich environments where they can thrive and graze efficiently.
