General Description
The Linear Blenny, scientifically known as Ecsenius lineatus, is commonly referred to as the Lined Blenny due to its distinct appearance. Sporting a white lower half and a brown to black upper half, these smaller-sized fish are characterized by their large eyes and small mouth, giving them a comical expression.
Aquarium Suitability
With its easy care requirements, the Linear Blenny is well-suited for both reef and peaceful fish-only aquariums, irrespective of their size. However, a minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended to accommodate their need for ample live rock for grazing, perching, and hiding. It is essential to avoid housing them with aggressive species that may stress or intimidate them into constant hiding.
Care and Hardiness
Being classified as an herbivore, the diet of the Linear Blenny should consist of vegetable matter, such as marine and blue-green algae, supplemented with frozen and dried foods. These fish are known to help control algae growth within the aquarium, contributing to the overall tank maintenance efforts.
Reef Suitability
The Linear Blenny is considered reef safe, but caution should be exercised as they may nip at the polyps or bases of Acropora sp. and other SPS corals. In SPS dominated aquariums with mature colonies, they may cause damage to Acropora sp. and Montipora sp. Hence, thoughtful consideration should be given before adding them to such setups.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Linear Blennies, it is essential to provide crevices and rocks for them to explore and hide. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a KH level of 8-12, and a specific gravity between 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their overall well-being.
Behaviour
These fish are known for their peaceful temperament, making them a great addition to community tanks. Their tendency to perch among rocks and engage in grazing activities adds an interesting dynamic to the aquarium environment.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding the Linear Blenny a varied diet that includes algae-based foods, frozen, and dried options is essential for their nutrition and overall health. Their willingness to consume algae within the aquarium makes them beneficial in controlling algae growth.
Dimorphism
Linear Blennies do not exhibit significant dimorphism, with males and females closely resembling each other in appearance.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, Linear Blennies are typically found nestled amid crevices and rocks at the bottom of their habitats. They are indigenous to regions with suitable conditions for their herbivorous lifestyle, contributing to the ecosystem through their grazing habits.
