General Description
The Biota Forktail Blenny, also known as the Lyretail Fang Blenny or Yellowtail Fang Blenny, features a distinctive caudal fin resembling a fork, with two long exterior spines and five shorter middle spines. The body coloration transitions from a pale blue to a bluish-yellow hue towards the tail. Males typically exhibit larger size than females and display color changes during breeding phases.
Aquarium Suitability
The Forktail Blenny is considered suitable for aquariums, requiring a minimum tank size of 30 gallons with live rock for hunting and grazing purposes. It is advisable to house only one blenny per tank unless maintaining a breeding pair. Caution is advised when handling the Forktail Blenny due to its venomous nature, particularly in the presence of children who may unintentionally provoke it.
Care and Hardiness
This species is categorized as moderate in care demands. The Biota Forktail Blenny exhibits hardier traits compared to its wild counterparts, making it well-suited for both novice and experienced aquarists. They are acclimated to conditions typically found in home aquariums.
Reef Suitability
Reef compatibility is affirmed for the Forktail Blenny, allowing it to thrive in reef tank setups. Its behavior is generally considered conducive to a reef environment without posing a threat to coral or other tank inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, provide water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level between 8-12. A well-maintained tank with ample hiding spots, live rock, and suitable lighting will enhance the well-being of the Biota Forktail Blenny.
Behaviour
Known for its semi-aggressive temperament, this blenny species may exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards similar-looking fish or intruders in its space. Proper tank planning with adequate territories can help mitigate aggression within the aquarium environment.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the Forktail Blenny thrives on a varied diet comprising finely chopped crustacean flesh, mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and frozen herbivore preparations. A consistent feeding schedule ensures their nutritional needs are met for optimal health.
Habitat and Distribution
The Biota Forktail Blenny species, scientifically known as Meiacanthus atrodorsalis, originates from Biota Marine Life Nursery in Palau. Their natural habitat includes the waters surrounding Palau, where they can be found in reef structures and rocky outcrops, displaying their characteristic foraging and territorial behaviors.
