General Description
The Bundoon Blenny, scientifically known as Meiacanthus bundoon, is a member of the Blenniidae family. This striking fish is native to Tonga in the South Pacific and features a distinctive black body with a horizontal yellow stripe extending from behind the eye to the midsection. One notable characteristic is its caudal fin, which resembles a fork. Males tend to be larger than females and display a series of color changes during the breeding season.
Aquarium Suitability
With a moderate care level, the Bundoon Blenny thrives in aquariums with a minimum size of 30 gallons. It is recommended to provide live rock within the tank to facilitate hunting and grazing activities. While generally peaceful, it is advisable to keep only one Bundoon Blenny unless maintaining a breeding pair.
Care and Hardiness
Renowned for their hardiness and durability, Bundoon Blennies are suitable for both novice and experienced aquarists. This resilience makes them an ideal choice for various skill levels within the hobby.
Reef Suitability
Reef enthusiasts will appreciate the Bundoon Blenny as it is considered reef-compatible. This species is known to coexist peacefully with invertebrates and corals, making it a valuable addition to reef aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
Maintaining water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 is crucial for the well-being of the Bundoon Blenny. Providing ample hiding spots and incorporating live rock will mimic its natural habitat and ensure a stimulating environment.
Behaviour
While generally peaceful, the Bundoon Blenny can exhibit semi-aggressive behavior when threatened. If attacked by other fish, it has been known to retaliate by delivering a painful bite to the attacker's mouth. This fish is venomous, and caution should be exercised, especially around children who may unintentionally provoke a defensive response.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the Bundoon Blenny's diet should consist of finely chopped crustacean flesh, mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and frozen herbivore preparations. Providing a varied diet will help maintain its health and vibrancy.
Dimorphism
Male Bundoon Blennies typically exhibit larger sizes compared to females. During the breeding season, males undergo distinct color changes, adding to their visual appeal.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Bundoon Blenny can be found in the waters of Tonga in the South Pacific. Its natural habitat includes rocky crevices and coral formations where it can seek refuge and forage for food.
