General Description
The Harptail Blenny, scientifically known as Meiacanthus mossambicus, is a captivating marine fish characterized by its deep golden-yellow coloration with a hint of green above the eye and a striking jet-black dorsal fin.
Aquarium Suitability
With its peaceful temperament and reef compatibility, the Harptail Blenny is an excellent choice for a reef tank setup due to its ability to coexist with various tankmates without causing trouble.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
This species is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Harptail Blennies thrive in a minimum tank size of 30 gallons or larger, preferably with live rock where they can graze on crustaceans. They require a well-balanced diet consisting of both carnivorous and herbivorous foods, offered in small quantities multiple times a day.
Reef Suitability
The Harptail Blenny is reef-compatible, adding to its appeal for reef tank enthusiasts. It can peacefully cohabit with other reef inhabitants without posing a threat to corals or invertebrates.
Aquarium Setup
To create an ideal environment for the Harptail Blenny, ensure water conditions are well-maintained, with parameters such as a pH level of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12. Providing ample hiding spots among live rock formations enhances the fish's comfort in the aquarium.
Behaviour
Known for their passive nature, Harptail Blennies rarely exhibit aggression towards other tankmates. However, they possess a unique defense mechanism where they can use their venomous fangs to deter predators by biting the inside of the predator's mouth, causing them to release the blenny unharmed.
Feeding and Diet
Being omnivores, Harptail Blennies require a varied diet that includes carnivorous and herbivorous foods. Their feeding regimen should consist of multiple feedings throughout the day to ensure their nutritional needs are met adequately.
Habitat and Distribution
The Harptail Blenny, native to the waters of Mozambique, can be found in various reef habitats along the African coast. In captivity, replicating a reef-like environment with suitable hiding places and live rock mimics their natural habitat, promoting their overall well-being.
