General Description:
The Scooter Blenny, also known as the Mandarin-fish or Ocellated dragonet, belongs to the Callionymidae family specifically Neosynchiropus genus. These dragonets are characterized by their bottom-dwelling behavior and preference for staying among rocks, seldom venturing into open water.
Aquarium Suitability:
Dragonets are best suited to aquariums teeming with pods, making them ideal for tanks that have been established for approximately a year. They are peaceful inhabitants that thrive when their food requirements are met, preferring environments with abundant populations of small pods. It's recommended to avoid keeping two males together due to potential territorial conflicts.
Demands:
Being relatively hardy, the Scooter Blenny is an average demanding species that requires attention to its dietary needs. They are resistant to common parasites but are sensitive to copper and certain medication types. Potential owners should ensure the fish is active and in good health when purchased.
Care and Hardiness:
This species requires live zooplankton and a significant number of pods in the aquarium to thrive. While some individuals may adapt to frozen foods over time, it can be challenging to provide an adequate supply. High-quality, varied food is essential, and patience may be required to train them to eat alternative foods or consider investing in a feeding device.
Reef Suitability:
The Scooter Blenny is always considered reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef tanks. However, caution is advised when housing them with anemones due to the risk of predation.
Aquarium Setup:
A minimum tank size of 300 liters is recommended for this species. Tank decor should include plenty of live rocks to support the pod population. Ensuring a mature aquarium with established microfauna will cater to the Scooter Blenny's natural feeding behavior.
Behaviour:
These dragonets exhibit mostly peaceful behavior but may display aggression towards similar species of the same gender. They tend to stay close to the substrate and rocks, rarely venturing into open water columns.
Feeding and Diet:
The recommended diet for the Scooter Blenny includes small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. While they primarily feed on live food, efforts can be made to transition them to frozen foods if needed.
Dimorphism:
Males of this species typically have stronger colors and larger front dorsal fins. They are best kept in pairs (male and female) or with one male and multiple females. The Scooter Blenny can be successfully bred in captivity, making captive-bred specimens a viable option.
Habitat and Distribution:
Found in the Pacific Ocean from southern Japan to the Marquesan Islands, the Scooter Blenny prefers habitats with rocky substrates and suitable microfauna populations to sustain its feeding behavior.
