General Description:
The Mailed Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Chaetodon reticulatus, belongs to the Chaetodontidae family. These fish are part of a complex that includes species with very similar appearances, making it essential to distinguish them due to varying needs. Typically found in the Pacific Ocean from the Ryukyu Islands to areas like the Great Barrier Reef, Hawaiian Islands, Marquesan Islands, and Ducie Islands, these fish boast intricate patterns and vibrant colors.
Aquarium Suitability:
Despite their alluring appearance, Mailed Butterflyfish are not suitable for home aquariums due to their dietary restrictions. They primarily feed on small polyp stone corals (SPS) and rely on live corals for sustenance. Without access to living corals, they will not survive in captivity.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness:
These fish have an average hardiness level and require specific care. They need ample hiding spots within live rocks and significant swimming space. Acclimatizing them to aquarium life can be challenging, and it's crucial to purchase healthy specimens free of parasites or infections. Mailed Butterflyfish are generally peaceful but may display aggression towards similar species.
Reef Suitability:
Mailed Butterflyfish are not reef-safe due to their diet that primarily consists of coral polyps. They should not be kept in reef aquariums as they will consume live corals for nourishment.
