General Description
The Blackfin coralfish (Chelmon muelleri), belonging to the Chaetodontidae family, is recognized for its striking black fin markings and vibrant colours. This species, found in the Western Pacific, specifically along the coastal reefs and estuaries of Queensland, boasts an elegant appearance characteristic of Butterflyfish.
Aquarium Suitability
Regarded as suitable with care, Blackfin coralfish can thrive in aquariums. They can coexist peacefully in pairs, as long as they are introduced simultaneously. However, caution is advised when housing them with more aggressive tank mates. They are known to be fastidious eaters, eating slowly and being selective with their food, requiring a varied diet for optimal health.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Blackfin coralfish are deemed hardy and can adapt well to aquarium environments. These species are docile in temperament but may exhibit aggression towards similar species. Frequent feedings several times a day are necessary, especially upon introduction to a new tank. They thrive best in well-established aquariums with an abundance of micro-life such as copepods, amphipods, or similar organisms.
Reef Suitability
Blackfin coralfish are often considered reef safe, making them a suitable addition to reef aquariums.
Aquarium Setup
For a Blackfin coralfish, a tank size of at least 700 liters is recommended. Maintain stable water conditions with a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a pH between 8.1-8.4, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025. Ensure suitable lighting and ample hiding spots among live rock formations.
Behaviour
These species are known to be shy and docile, preferring peaceful cohabitation with other fish. They may occasionally nibble on clams, including Tridacna species, and feed on tubeworms.
Feeding and Diet
Blackfin coralfish have a varied diet that includes larger crustaceans, other invertebrates, small crustaceans such as krill and mysis, and zooplankton like Cyclops and pods. Mimicking their natural feeding preferences by offering live food can help with successful acclimatization.
Habitat and Distribution
The Blackfin coralfish is exclusively found in the coastal reefs and estuaries of Queensland in the Western Pacific. Recent sightings have also been recorded in northwestern Australia.
