General Description
Eastern Talmas belong to the Chaetodontidae family, known for their captivating patterns and colors. Chelmonops truncatus, a species in the Chelmonops genus, has extended dorsal and anal fins, which distinguish it from its relative, C. curiosus. These fish possess a docile temperament but can display aggression towards similar species. They are native to Australia and the Central/West Pacific regions, with a maximum size of 22.0cm.
Aquarium Suitability
Eastern Talmas are considered suitable for specialized aquariums due to their eating habits and habitat needs. These fish are fastidious feeders, eating slowly and being selective in their diet. They require feeding several times a day, particularly after introduction to a new tank. To aid in their acclimatization, offering live food is recommended. Eastern Talmas might initially refuse to eat in captivity but usually adapt within a week.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Eastern Talmas have average hardiness levels and thrive in water temperatures between 22.2-25.6°C (72-78°F). They prefer cooler waters than typical marine aquarium species. This fish species necessitates a well-established tank with an ample supply of micro life, such as copepods and amphipods, for constant foraging. They are shy and docile, requiring caution when housed with more aggressive tank mates.
Reef Suitability
Eastern Talmas are not suitable for reef tanks as they might nibble on clams, including Tridacna species. Due to their feeding habits, they are not compatible with coral environments. Additionally, their specialized diet and behavior make them less suitable for reef setups.
Aquarium Setup
Aquarium setup for Eastern Talmas should include a tank size of at least 500 liters. Maintaining water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 is crucial. Providing ample hiding spots and suitable tank mates is essential, considering their docile nature and occasional aggressiveness towards similar species.
Behaviour
Eastern Talmas are known for their peaceful demeanor towards most fish. However, they might exhibit aggression towards conspecifics unless they are a mated pair. These fish tend to be shy and prefer a calm environment with limited disturbances.
Feeding and Diet
Eastern Talmas feed on a varied diet, including larger crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, other invertebrates, small crustaceans such as krill and mysis, and zooplankton like cyclops and pods. Their feeding habits can be challenging due to their slow eating pace and selective nature, necessitating a diverse and consistent diet in captivity.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Eastern Talmas are found in Australian waters and the Central/West Pacific region. They prefer cooler waters ranging from 19-25°C (66-77°F) and exhibit a fondness for foods like tubeworms. These fish typically inhabit areas with soft corals, LPS corals, anemones, and various marine invertebrates, making it essential to replicate similar environments in aquarium settings.
