General Description
The Highfin coralfish, scientifically known as Coradion altivelis, belongs to the Chaetodontidae family. These fish, commonly referred to as High-fin butterflyfish, are recognizable for their striking patterns and colors. They are distinguishable from Angelfish by the absence of spines on each side of their head. Highfin coralfish are predominantly found in the Indo-West Pacific region, spanning from the Andaman Sea and Sumatra to Papua New Guinea, extending north to southern Japan and south to northwest Australia along the Great Barrier Reef.
Aquarium Suitability
Highfin coralfish are deemed suitable for aquariums with necessary care due to their peaceful temperament. They can coexist as a pair if introduced simultaneously and are known to be docile, requiring caution when housed with more aggressive tank mates. These fish have an average hardiness level and are generally peaceful towards other fish species.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
Highfin coralfish have specific water condition requirements, preferring a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a carbonate hardness (kH) of 8-12, and a specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.025. They thrive in temperatures ranging from 22.2 to 25.6 degrees Celsius. These fish typically consume microalgae such as spirulina, small crustaceans like krill and mysis, and zooplankton including Cyclops and pods.
Reef Suitability
Highfin coralfish are known to be often reef safe, making them compatible with reef aquarium setups. They exhibit a preference for various soft and LPS corals, anemones, tubeworms, and bristleworms as part of their natural diet.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate Highfin coralfish in an aquarium, a tank size of at least 400 liters is recommended. The setup should include adequate hiding spots and suitable live coral structures in which the fish can seek refuge.
Behaviour
Highfin coralfish are shy in nature and tend to be docile within their environment. They are not typically aggressive towards other fish, allowing for peaceful cohabitation with multiple Highfin butterflyfish in the same tank.
Feeding and Diet
In captivity, Highfin coralfish can be fed a diet consisting of frozen foods if breeding is successful. However, some species may require their natural diet, such as live SPS or LPS corals. It is crucial to ensure healthy feeding habits to avoid potential health issues.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Highfin coralfish are distributed across the East Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, and the Central/West Pacific regions. They inhabit areas with appropriate coral structures and ample hiding spaces for security and foraging opportunities.
