General Description:

The Brown-and-white butterflyfish, also known as the "Black pyramid butterflyfish" in English, belongs to the Chaetodontidae family, specifically the Hemitaurichthys genus. This species can be found in the Indian Ocean, ranging from East Africa to Guam with a distribution extending north to India and south to Mauritius. Their striking patterns and colors, typical of Butterflyfish, make them visually appealing in aquarium settings.

Aquarium Suitability:

Considered suitable for aquariums, the Brown-and-white butterflyfish requires cautious care due to its specific demands. It is deemed reef-safe with some luck, but may nibble at clams such as Tridacna species and has a preference for consuming tubeworms. Hardy in nature, they thrive in peaceful environments and can be kept in groups, provided similar species are kept in pairs to avoid conflict.

Demands, Care and Hardiness:

This species has a peaceful temperament but may exhibit initial shyness in a new aquarium setup. It requires ample space for swimming and good hiding spots like live rocks. Feeding should be frequent and varied, consisting of larger crustaceans, zooplankton, and other invertebrates. Acclimatization and feeding can prove challenging, so starting with healthy specimens is crucial for their well-being.

Reef Suitability:

With the right conditions and precautions, the Brown-and-white butterflyfish can coexist in reef aquariums. It is important to note that luck plays a role in its reef compatibility, as it may snack on some reef inhabitants like clams. Providing a varied diet and suitable hiding spots can help mitigate potential issues.

In an aquarium setting, a minimum tank size of 500 liters is recommended to accommodate the swimming needs of this species. Maintaining stable water conditions with a temperature range between 22.2-25.6°C, pH levels of 8.1-8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is essential for their well-being.

Behaviour:

The Brown-and-white butterflyfish is known for its peaceful demeanor and can adapt well to communal living with other non-aggressive tank mates. While they may be shy initially, they can acclimate to their environment and coexist harmoniously with appropriate tank companions.

Feeding and Diet:

Feeding several times a day with a varied diet is essential for this species, encompassing larger crustaceans, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and other invertebrates. Ensuring they receive their natural food sources is crucial, especially for individuals that may be reluctant to accept replacement foods.

Habitat and Distribution:
