General Description

The Blacknosed Butterflyfish (Johnrandallia nigrirostris) is a member of the Chaetodontidae family, characterized by its striking patterns and colors. Belonging to the category of butterflyfish, it is closely related to angelfish but lacks the spines typical of angelfish. This species is known for seeking out soft corals like Zoanthus and various types of Large Polyp Stone (LPS) corals. They also feed on anemones, tubeworms, bristleworms, and small invertebrates. Blacknosed Butterflyfish are generally peaceful and can coexist with multiple individuals of the same species, but caution is advised when keeping similar species together unless they are a mated pair.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for aquariums with care, the Blacknosed Butterflyfish requires a tank of at least 500 liters due to its need for ample swimming space. It is hardy in terms of resilience and can thrive in the East Pacific location. Frequent feeding is essential, especially during the acclimatization period. Good hiding spots among live rocks are necessary, and the inclusion of a varied diet is crucial for their well-being. This species has a recommended diet consisting of larger crustaceans, macroalgae like seaweed, microalgae such as spirulina, other invertebrates, small crustaceans, and zooplankton.

Care and Hardiness

As a hardy species, the Blacknosed Butterflyfish requires constant feeding, particularly when first introduced to the aquarium. Regular monitoring for parasites is crucial, as these fish can help control parasitic life in the tank. However, excessive cleaning behavior can stress the fish, so precautions should be taken if the tank already has weakened fish. Ideal water conditions include a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025.

Reef Suitability

Not considered reef-safe, the Blacknosed Butterflyfish can pose a threat to reef inhabitants like clams, snails, and marine invertebrates such as tubeworms. Their diet of LPS corals and large polyp stone corals makes them unsuitable for reef environments.

Aquarium Setup

To accommodate the Blacknosed Butterflyfish, a well-structured aquarium setup should include plenty of live rocks for hiding places and swimming areas. Ensuring a varied diet is accessible, and replicating their natural habitat with coral skeletons or stones can aid in their acclimatization and overall health.

Behaviour

This species of Butterflyfish is mostly peaceful but may exhibit aggression towards similar species, especially if not in a mated pair. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, requiring a tank with open spaces for movement.

Feeding and Diet

Their diet primarily consists of large polyp stone corals, parasites, larger crustaceans, macroalgae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. Maintaining a diverse and nutrient-rich diet is crucial for the Blacknosed Butterflyfish's well-being and overall health.

Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction

The Blacknosed Butterflyfish does not exhibit distinct dimorphism, and information on captive reproduction is not covered.

Habitat and Distribution

These fish are found in the Eastern Pacific region, from the Gulf of California to Panama, including various islands such as the Cocos, Malpelo, and Galapagos Islands. Their natural habitat includes coral reefs and rocky areas rich in marine life.
