General Description

The Four-Eyed Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Chaetodon capistratus, is a delicate member of the Chaetodontidae family. This beautiful fish is adorned with two false eyespots at the base of its caudal fin, serving as a defense mechanism by misdirecting predators. Its creamy-white body is accented with iridescent stripes that run off the center, complemented by a vibrant yellow outline along the outer edge.

Aquarium Suitability

The Four-Eyed Butterflyfish, with its peaceful temperament, is best kept in aquariums with other calm tankmates. However, it is recommended to avoid keeping individuals of the same sex together due to potential aggressive behavior. This species is not suitable for reef aquariums as it tends to consume stony corals and gorgonian polyps.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Categorized as a carnivorous species, the Four-Eyed Butterflyfish can be challenging to feed initially. To encourage eating, provide live vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, clam, mashed squid, or shrimp. Once acclimated, offer mysis shrimp and frozen carnivore preparations regularly. A feeding schedule of at least three times a day is recommended to ensure proper nutrition for this species.

Reef Suitability

Due to its dietary preferences, the Four-Eyed Butterflyfish is not considered reef-compatible. Its tendency to consume stony corals and gorgonian polyps makes it unsuitable for reef environments. Therefore, it is best suited for fish-only aquarium setups.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank size of at least 453 liters is recommended for housing the Four-Eyed Butterflyfish. Maintaining water conditions with a pH level between 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12 dKH will support the health and well-being of this species.

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful temperament, the Four-Eyed Butterflyfish is best kept in environments with compatible tankmates. While male-female pairs can coexist, aggression may arise between same-sex individuals. Monitoring interactions within the tank is essential to prevent conflicts.

Feeding and Diet

As a carnivorous species, the Four-Eyed Butterflyfish requires a diet rich in protein. Initially, offering live vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, clam, and mashed squid or shrimp can help stimulate feeding. Once acclimated, transitioning to mysis shrimp and frozen carnivore preparations will provide a balanced diet for this species.

Habitat and Distribution

Chaetodon capistratus, the Four-Eyed Butterflyfish, is commonly found in the tropical waters of the Western Atlantic Ocean. Its natural habitat includes coral reefs, rocky shores, and lagoons where it can forage for food and seek shelter. This species' distribution ranges from Florida to the Bahamas, extending southwards to Brazil.
