General Description

The White Faced Butterflyfish, scientifically known as Chaetodon mesoleucos, is also referred to as the Red Sea Butterflyfish. This species showcases a sturdy constitution and thrives in a tranquil aquarium environment. Its body features varying shades of gray accentuated by numerous black vertical stripes, creating an impression of armor. A distinguishing feature of this butterflyfish is its white face adorned with a dark band that traverses through the eye.

Aquarium Suitability

Characterized as expert-only, the White Faced Butterflyfish demands precise care in captivity. To cater to its needs effectively, an aquarium of 70 gallons or larger is recommended. The habitat should incorporate substantial live rock formations that serve as hiding spots and grazing grounds. This species can exhibit aggression towards conspecifics and even members of its own species, underscoring the importance of keeping it in a peaceful community with non-aggressive tank mates.

Care and Hardiness

Due to its omnivorous nature, the White Faced Butterflyfish's diet should include dried seaweed, Spirulina-based foods, vitamin-enriched brine and mysis shrimp, along with finely chopped meaty offerings. It is vital to maintain stable water conditions within the parameters of a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) level of 8-12.
