General Description

The Marcella Butterflyfish (Prognathodes marcellae) is a smaller and rarer species within the Butterflyfish family, known for its striking appearance with a yellow body, translucent caudal fin, and showy yellow fins adorned with two vertical black bars, one passing through its eyes.

Aquarium Suitability

The Marcella Butterflyfish is suitable for a Fish Only With Live Rock aquarium due to its tendency to nibble on inverts and coral polyps in its vicinity. It can be housed singly or in pairs but should not be kept with other species from the Prognathodes genus or similar-looking fish, requiring ample space to swim freely.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

With a moderate level of care needed, this peaceful omnivore is efficient in locating food with its specialized mouth shape and hair-like teeth that allow it to access small spaces for foraging. It accepts a varied diet including frozen meaty preparations and algae-based foods, thriving in water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12.

Reef Suitability

Not suitable for reef tanks, the Marcella Butterflyfish poses a threat to coral polyps and invertebrates within a reef environment.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, provide a spacious aquarium of at least 453 liters with ample swimming room and suitable hiding spots. Maintain stable water parameters meeting its requirements and incorporate live rock for natural grazing opportunities.

Behaviour

This Butterflyfish species exhibits a peaceful temperament when housed appropriately, yet may display aggression towards conspecifics or similar-looking fish. It tends to roam actively throughout the aquarium and should be provided with enough space to explore.

Feeding and Diet

As an omnivore, the Marcella Butterflyfish feeds on small invertebrates, Aiptasia, algae, and other meaty foods. Offer a varied diet including frozen preparations and algae-based foods to ensure proper nutrition and health.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the wild among rocky crevices and coral reefs, the Marcella Butterflyfish inhabits deep waters, typically between 15-30 meters, in the tropical regions of the ocean.
