General Description

The Flame Hawkfish (Neocirrhites armatus) belongs to the Cirrhitidae family, known for their still demeanor and predatory behavior. This species, native to the Pacific Ocean from the Ryukyu Islands to the Line Islands and south to the Great Barrier Reef, typically reaches a maximum size of 9.0 cm. They are recognized for their vibrant red coloration, adding a striking visual appeal to aquariums.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for aquariums, the Flame Hawkfish is known to be hardy and can thrive in a tank with a minimum size of 100 liters. Despite their hardiness, they can exhibit aggression towards smaller fish, crustaceans, snails, and worms. In captivity, providing ample hiding spots is essential to help them feel secure.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness

Flame Hawkfish have moderate care demands, requiring stable water conditions with a temperature ranging from 22.2-25.6°C, a pH level of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12. They are hardy fish that do not place excessive demands on water quality.

Reef Suitability

These fish are considered reef-safe with caution, as they can pose a threat to small invertebrates and crustaceans within a reef tank. Due to their predatory nature, caution should be exercised when housing them in a reef environment.

Aquarium Setup

To create an ideal habitat for Flame Hawkfish, an aquarium setup with ample live rock for hiding places is recommended. They thrive in an environment that mimics their natural habitat, allowing them to exhibit their natural behaviors comfortably.

Behaviour

Flame Hawkfish are known for their interesting and sometimes aggressive behavior, particularly towards fish that may resemble them. They can be kept in pairs if introduced simultaneously, but caution should be exercised when housing them with similar species or when the tank is overcrowded.

Feeding and Diet

Their diet in the wild consists of larger crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. In captivity, they can be fed small crustaceans like krill, mysis shrimp, and artemia, as well as zooplankton like Cyclops and pods. A varied and high-quality diet helps maintain their vibrant coloration.

Dimorphism

These fish are hermaphroditic, capable of changing gender from female to male as needed. In some instances, sudden aggression between individuals in the tank may signal a gender change, potentially resulting in conflicts.

Habitat and Distribution

Flame Hawkfish are found in the Pacific Ocean, inhabiting regions from the Ryukyu Islands to the Line Islands and extending south to the Great Barrier Reef. Their natural habitat includes rocky crevices and coral reefs where they can perch and wait for prey.
