General Description:The Paracirrhites forsteri, commonly known as the Blackside hawkfish or Freckled hawk, belongs to the Cirrhitidae family. Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea to the Hawaiian islands, this species showcases a striking blackside pattern.

Aquarium Suitability:Considered suitable for aquariums, the Blackside hawkfish requires specific attention due to its aggressive nature towards other fish and crustaceans. It is essential to provide regular feeding, ample hiding spots, and sufficient space to mitigate potential aggressive behavior.

Demands, Care, and Hardiness:This species of hawkfish is characterized as hardy and does not have extensive demands regarding water quality. However, it is important to note that they can exhibit sudden aggression, possibly attributed to gender changes, particularly in larger specimens.

Reef Suitability:While classified as reef-safe with caution, the Blackside hawkfish can coexist in a reef environment but should be monitored closely due to its predatory nature towards smaller crustaceans.

Aquarium Setup:For optimal care, it is recommended to provide a tank of at least 300 liters with good hiding spots such as live rocks. Maintaining water conditions within the parameters of pH 8.1-8.4, temperature levels of 22.2-25.6°C, and a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025 is crucial for their well-being.

Behaviour:Known for their fun and interesting personalities, Blackside hawkfish are relatively stationary, waiting for food opportunities. Despite their passive demeanor, they can display aggression towards other fish species, especially when introduced after they have established their territory.

Feeding and Diet:These hawkfish primarily feed on fish and various crustaceans of appropriate size, including larger crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, as well as smaller options such as krill, mysis, and artemia.

Dimorphism:Notably, the Blackside hawkfish is hermaphroditic, possessing the ability to change from female to male as necessitated by the social dynamics within the group.

Habitat and Distribution:The Blackside hawkfish thrives in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Red Sea to regions like Japan, Indonesia, and the East Pacific. They prefer rocky crevices and coral reefs as their natural habitat, showcasing their adaptability to various marine environments.
