General Description

The Money Cowrie Snail (Cypraea moneta) is a small oval snail species that typically grows just over one inch in length. This marine mollusk features a smooth, shiny, domed shell with a long narrow toothed opening. It is predominantly creamy in color with brown markings, showcasing a brown and white upper shell and a mostly white underside with a tan center.

Aquarium Suitability

Suitable for reef aquariums, the Money Cowrie Snail thrives in mature setups with established live rock. However, it is best kept away from aggressive tank mates that could harm it. Known for its efficacy in consuming algae, it is crucial to monitor the snail regularly as it struggles to right itself when overturned.

Care and Hardiness

Considered easy to care for, the Money Cowrie Snail requires careful acclimatization to aquarium conditions due to its sensitivity to water parameter changes. It is essential to maintain stable water quality, particularly avoiding high nitrate levels and copper-based medications. Providing one to two snails per 10 gallons of water is recommended to ensure sufficient space and algae control.

Reef Suitability

Reef-compatible, this peaceful snail species contributes to maintaining a balanced ecosystem in a reef aquarium. Its herbivorous diet primarily consists of film algae, diatoms, hair algae, and select cyanobacteria, although supplementing its diet with dried seaweed or vegetable-based food is necessary to prevent starvation.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Money Cowrie Snails, ensure the presence of mature reef environments with live rock and stable water conditions. Introduce the snails using the drip acclimation method over several hours to minimize stress and enable a smoother transition. A tank size of at least 113 liters is advisable for accommodating these snails adequately.

Behaviour

Showing a peaceful temperament, Money Cowrie Snails are generally efficient algae eaters, actively contributing to algae control in the aquarium. Due to their struggle to self-right if overturned, it is essential to monitor their activities regularly and ensure a safe environment within the tank.

Feeding and Diet

As herbivores, Money Cowrie Snails primarily feed on various types of algae like film algae, diatoms, and hair algae. To provide a balanced diet, supplement their algae consumption with dried seaweed or vegetable-based tablet food to prevent malnutrition and ensure their overall health.
