General Description
The Golden Spadefish, also known as Boer's Batfish, belongs to the Ephippidae family, specifically the Platax genus. These fish, characterized by their distinctive golden hue, can grow up to 40 cm in size. They are native to the Indo-West Pacific region, including areas like Indonesia, New Guinea, and the Philippines.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums with care, the Golden Spadefish has average hardiness levels. They require a minimum tank size of 1500 liters due to their substantial dietary needs and preference for ample swimming space. While initially shy and likely to hide in a new environment, they can adapt well over time and coexist peacefully with other more aggressive fish once acclimatized.
Care and Hardiness
These fish have an average level of hardiness and should be carefully introduced to an aquarium environment. Given their heavy feeding habits, they require a varied diet consisting of larger crustaceans, macroalgae, and small crustaceans like krill and artemia. Additionally, providing overhangs, caves, and a spacious setup is crucial for their well-being.
Reef Suitability
Golden Spadefish are not considered reef-safe due to their predatory nature towards invertebrates, anemones, and corals. Thus, they are not recommended for coral-specific tanks.
Aquarium Setup
An ideal aquarium setup for Golden Spadefish includes ample swimming space, hiding spots like caves and overhangs, and a diet consisting of a variety of food types to accommodate their feeding habits. Maintaining stable water conditions with a pH ranging from 8.1 to 8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C is essential for their well-being.
Behaviour
Golden Spadefish are generally peaceful in temperament, though they may exhibit shyness initially. They tend to hide when introduced to a new tank but will eventually become more active and social once comfortable in their environment.
Feeding and Diet
To meet their dietary requirements, Golden Spadefish should be fed a mix of algae-based foods, frozen items, and larger crustaceans. Their diet should be diverse to ensure their nutritional needs are met adequately.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, these fish are distributed across the East Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, and the Central/West Pacific regions. They are commonly found in areas such as Indonesia, including the Mentawai Islands, and exhibit a fast growth rate, with small individuals reaching heights of 25 cm within a few months.
