General Description

The Orbicular Batfish, scientifically known as Platax orbicularis, belongs to the Ephippidae family. These fish are not ideal for coral aquariums as they can pose a threat to shrimps, anemones, corals, and other invertebrates. They have a rapid growth rate, with a small fish being able to reach a height of 25 cm in just a few months. Although they quickly adapt to feeding, they might hide for a few days post-transportation due to stress. Care should be taken during handling as their fins are delicate.

Aquarium Suitability

Considered suitable for captivity if given proper care, the Orbicular Batfish should be housed in a spacious tank of at least 2000 liters due to their growth potential and feeding habits. They are relatively peaceful but can exhibit aggression towards similar species. Additionally, they are initially shy and may require time to acclimate to a new environment before more assertive tank mates are introduced.

Care and Hardiness

Categorized as having an average level of hardiness, the Orbicular Batfish require a varied diet that includes algae-based foods, frozen options, and seafood. They have a substantial appetite and necessitate aquariums that can accommodate their feeding demands. To thrive, they need ample space for swimming and benefit from the presence of overhangs and caves in their environment.

Reef Suitability

Not considered reef-safe, these batfish can be a risk to anemones within reef setups. They may also pose a threat to smaller crustaceans such as shrimps and crabs due to their predatory nature.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, an aquarium housing the Orbicular Batfish should provide sufficient swimming space, hiding spots in the form of overhangs or caves, and a diet consisting of larger crustaceans, macroalgae, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans.

Behaviour

The Orbicular Batfish, though generally peaceful, can display aggression towards similar species. They may exhibit shy behavior initially and prefer to acclimate to new surroundings before becoming more active in the tank environment.

Feeding and Diet

Their diet should include a variety of foods such as larger crustaceans, macroalgae like seaweed or nori, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Maintaining a diverse diet is essential for their health and well-being.

Dimorphism

Orbicular Batfish do not exhibit distinct dimorphic characteristics. In captivity, successful reproduction has been achieved through appropriate breeding conditions and care, contributing to the species' sustainability.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, and south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. They have also been documented off the coast of Florida in the Western Central Atlantic. These batfish thrive in tropical marine environments but must be housed carefully in captivity due to their dietary and compatibility needs.
