General Description

The Dusky batfish (Platax pinnatus) belongs to the Ephippidae family, characterized by their quick growth rate. These fish can reach heights of 25 cm within months and are known to start feeding promptly after introduction to an aquarium. However, they may exhibit shyness and occasionally hide after transportation due to their delicate fins, making them a challenging species to maintain in captivity. Their common names include Shaded batfish, Long-finned batfish, Dusky batfish, Pinnate spadefish, and Pinnate batfish.

Aquarium Suitability

Experience, preparation, and extra care are essential when considering the Dusky batfish for aquariums. They are not well-suited to coral tanks due to their threat towards shrimps, anemones, and corals. It is recommended to be cautious while handling them and to ensure a suitable tank size of at least 1200 liters to accommodate their growth and space requirements.

Demands

Being a fastidious species, Dusky batfish necessitate specialized food and a high water quality environment for their well-being. They may suffer from malnutrition in captivity, requiring enriched food with omega-3 and vitamins. A nutritious diet comprising algae-based food, frozen varieties, and seafood is crucial for their survival. Moreover, they thrive in aquariums with overhangs, caves, and swimming space but can be stressed by poor water quality, making them susceptible to diseases like Marine Ich.

Care and Hardiness

The Dusky batfish is delicate, demanding meticulous attention and maintenance. Their heavy feeding habits necessitate a tank capable of sustaining the species' dietary requirements. They are notably sensitive to changes and stress, requiring acclimatization before introducing more aggressive tankmates.

Reef Suitability

These batfish are not considered reef-safe, as they pose a threat to various invertebrates typically found in reef environments. Their compatibility with crustaceans, such as shrimps and crabs, is limited due to their predatory nature towards smaller marine life.

Aquarium Setup

To provide an optimal habitat for the Dusky batfish, a large tank with ample swimming space, overhangs, and caves is essential. Maintaining stable water parameters within the specified ranges of pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.020-1.025, temperature 22.2-25.6°C, and carbonate hardness of 8-12 dKH is crucial for their well-being.

Behaviour

While mostly peaceful, the Dusky batfish may exhibit aggression towards similar species. They are known to be fastidious eaters, requiring time to adapt to the aquarium environment and a varied diet to thrive.

Feeding and Diet

Their recommended diet consists of larger crustaceans, macroalgae, other invertebrates, and small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia. Live food can aid in their acclimatization process, ensuring a higher chance of successful long-term care.

Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction

Dusky batfish can be bred in captivity, making captive-bred specimens a viable option for aquarists. However, they may require extra care and attention during the breeding process to ensure successful reproduction.

Habitat and Distribution

The natural habitat of the Dusky batfish spans from the Ryukyu Islands to Australia in the Western Pacific region. Although their presence in the Indian Ocean is uncertain, these fish are commonly found in regions like Australia, Japan, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific.
