General Description:The Longfin batfish, scientifically known as Platax teira, is a species belonging to the Ephippidae family. These fish are not ideal for coral aquariums due to their tendency to pose a threat to shrimps, anemones, corals, and other invertebrates. They can grow rapidly, with small individuals reaching heights of up to 25 cm within a few months. Although they usually start feeding quickly, some Longfin batfish may hide for a few days after being introduced into a new environment. Care should be taken when handling them, as their delicate fins are prone to damage.
Aquarium Suitability:With an average hardiness level, Longfin batfish are suitable for aquariums but come with specific care requirements. They are considered suitable with care due to their aggressive nature towards crustaceans and invertebrates, making them unsuitable for reef tanks. These fish demand a tank size of at least 2000 liters to accommodate their appetite and need for swimming space.
Care and Hardiness:Longfin batfish require a varied diet consisting of algae-based foods, frozen foods, and seafood to thrive. They are initially shy when introduced to a new tank but can become more active once acclimated. It is advisable not to disturb them during this acclimation period, as it can delay their adjustment. Providing overhangs, caves, and plenty of space for swimming is essential for meeting their care needs.

Habitat and Distribution:Longfin batfish are native to the Indo-West Pacific region, ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to Papua New Guinea, the Ryukyu Islands, and Australia. They can also be found in specific locations like the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. Their natural habitat includes areas with diverse marine life where they can exhibit their predatory behavior.
