General Description
The Amblyeleotris diagonalis, commonly known as the Diagonal shrimp goby, belongs to the Gobiidae family. These small, hardy fish are typically found in the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, The Red Sea, Indonesia, and the Central/West Pacific. They can grow up to 11.0cm in size and are known for their aggressive temperament towards similar species.
Aquarium Suitability
The Diagonal shrimp goby is considered suitable for aquariums with caution. They require a tank size of at least 100 liters, with a substrate that allows them to burrow. Frequent feeding, especially during acclimation, is essential for their well-being.
Care and Hardiness
This species is known for its hardiness, making them relatively easy to care for in a well-equipped tank. They should be housed with Pistol shrimp of the Alpheus genus to maintain their symbiotic relationship.
Reef Suitability
The Diagonal shrimp goby is always reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums. They do well in reef environments and can coexist peacefully with corals and other reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
Setting up an aquarium for Diagonal shrimp gobies involves providing a substrate that facilitates burrowing. A mix of sand, coral pieces, shells, and broken up shell fragments is ideal. It is important to create secure spaces like rocks for the fish to establish their burrows safely.
Behaviour
These fish exhibit territorial behavior and can be aggressive towards approaching fish. They prefer having their own space and can be protective of their territory.
Feeding and Diet
Diagonal shrimp gobies feed on small crustaceans such as krill, mysis, and artemia. They require multiple feedings throughout the day, especially if they cannot source natural food in the aquarium.
Habitat and Distribution
Natively found in the Indo-Pacific region from Kenya to the Great Barrier Reef, Diagonal shrimp gobies inhabit sandy bottoms in coastal areas. Their distribution includes regions like Madagascar, the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, Sri Lanka, and various Pacific islands.
