General Description
The Steinitz' prawn-goby (Amblyeleotris steinitzi) belongs to the Gobiidae family, specifically Amblyeleotris. Found in the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea to Samoa, north to the Yaeyama Islands, and south to the Great Barrier Reef, this species can grow up to 13.0cm in length.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable with care, Steinitz' prawn-gobies are known to jump out of open aquariums, so a secure lid is essential. While they can be kept in a small tank if the setup meets their specific needs, it is generally advised to house them in larger aquariums. They are aggressive towards most approaching fishes and enjoy having their own territory.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
This species is deemed hardy, thriving in water conditions with a pH of 8.1-8.4, a temperature range of 22.2-25.6°C, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness of 8-12 dKH. They require frequent feeding, especially when newly added, and prefer substrates that allow them to burrow, such as sand, coral pieces, shells, and broken shells.
