General Description
The Masked goby (Coryphopterus personatus) is a small fish belonging to the Gobiidae family. Originating from the Western Central Atlantic, its distribution spans from Florida, Bermuda, and the Bahamas to northern South America, including the Lesser Antilles and Antilles.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, the Masked goby is known for its peaceful temperament and ability to thrive in reef setups. It is recommended to provide good hiding spots like live rocks, as this species tends to seek shelter in between them.
Demands, Care, and Hardiness
With an average hardiness level, this species requires a minimum tank size of 50 liters and is suitable for captivity breeding. Coryphopterus personatus should be fed multiple times a day, especially when newly introduced, though less frequent feeding is needed once it can find natural food in the aquarium.
Reef Suitability
The Masked goby is always considered reef-safe, making it an excellent addition to reef aquariums. Its peaceful nature and small size make it well-suited for cohabitation with various reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Masked goby, ensure a stable water temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, a pH level of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8-12. The tank should also include hiding places and a suitable diet consisting of small crustaceans and zooplankton.
Behaviour
This goby species is known for its peaceful temperament, making it an ideal addition to community aquariums. It tends to be reclusive and may hide among live rocks or in crevices within the tank.
Feeding and Diet
The Masked goby sustains itself on a diet of small crustaceans like Krill, Mysis, and Artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. It requires regular feeding, especially upon introduction to the aquarium, to ensure its nutritional needs are met.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Masked goby can be found in the Mexican Gulf and other areas of the West Atlantic. Its natural habitat includes sandy bottoms and rocky crevices where it seeks refuge and forages for food.
