General Description
The Gold Neon Eviota Goby, scientifically known as Eviota pellucida, is a small fish belonging to the Gobiidae family, typically reaching a maximum size of 2.0cm. This species, also referred to as the Neon pygmy goby, Neon pygmy-goby, or Pellucida pygmy goby, is native to the Western Pacific, specifically found in regions such as the Gilbert and Marshall islands, Ponape, Mariana Islands, and the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.
Aquarium Suitability
With an average level of hardiness, the Gold Neon Eviota Goby is considered suitable for aquariums, especially for enthusiasts who can provide the necessary care. This species thrives in a well-established aquarium with ample hiding places, such as between live rocks, and benefits from a tank size of at least 50 liters. Additionally, they do well with other members of their species if introduced simultaneously and are known to be docile but may display aggression towards similar species.
Demands, Care and Hardiness
The Gold Neon Eviota Goby requires frequent feeding, particularly when newly introduced to an aquarium. They feed on small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as cyclops and pods. This species is known to be shy and docile, making it essential to house them with non-aggressive tank mates. They prefer water conditions with a pH range of 8.1-8.4, a specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, a temperature between 22.2-25.6°C, and a dKH of 8-12.
Reef Suitability
The Gold Neon Eviota Goby is considered reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums without causing harm to corals or other invertebrates. Their small size and peaceful nature make them a compatible choice for reef environments.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for the Gold Neon Eviota Goby, ensure there are sufficient hiding spots like live rocks, as they prefer to seek shelter in these areas. It is essential to maintain a well-established tank with a substantial population of microorganisms like copepods and amphipods to ensure a constant food source for the Goby.
Behaviour
This species is known to be shy and tends to hide in its surroundings. They may exhibit territorial behavior towards similar species, so it is advisable to monitor their interactions if kept with other Gobies.
Feeding and Diet
Feeding the Gold Neon Eviota Goby multiple times a day is recommended, especially initially. Their diet consists of small crustaceans and zooplankton, which can be provided commercially through foods like krill, mysis, artemia, cyclops, and pods.
Dimorphism
In captivity, the Gold Neon Eviota Goby can be bred successfully, demonstrating captive reproduction capabilities. This allows for the availability of captive-bred specimens in the aquarium trade.
