General Description
The Common Fusegoby, also known as the Sand Goby, is a member of the Gobiidae family, specifically Fusigobius neophytus. These small fish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from East Africa to the Tuamoto Islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to Lord Howe Island. They have a maximum size of approximately 7.0cm.
Aquarium Suitability
Considered suitable for aquariums, the Common Fusegoby is known for being docile yet may exhibit aggression towards similar species. These fish thrive better without other members of the same species in the aquarium and require good hiding places such as live rocks to feel secure.
Care and Hardiness
With an average level of hardiness, this species is very shy and docile, requiring cautious consideration when housed alongside more aggressive fish. It filters sand in search of food, although it may not be as proficient at this as some other sand-dwelling gobies. Regular feedings several times a day are recommended, especially when initially introduced to the tank.
Reef Suitability
The Common Fusegoby is always considered reef-safe, making it a suitable addition to reef aquariums without posing a threat to coral and other reef inhabitants.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Common Fusegoby, a minimum tank size of 100 liters is recommended. Water conditions should be maintained within a specific range: pH levels between 8.1 to 8.4, temperature between 22.2 to 25.6 degrees Celsius, and a specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. These fish prefer alkaline water with a carbonate hardness level between 8-12 dKH.
Behaviour
These gobies are known for their timid nature and may exhibit some aggression towards similar species. They tend to hide amongst live rocks and seek refuge in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots.
Feeding and Diet
The Common Fusegoby's diet typically consists of small crustaceans like krill, mysis, and artemia, as well as zooplankton such as Cyclops and pods. They should be fed multiple times a day, especially upon introduction to the aquarium.
Dimorphism and Captive Reproduction
Information regarding dimorphism and captive reproduction of the Common Fusegoby is not specified.
Habitat and Distribution
In the wild, the Common Fusegoby inhabits various regions across the East Indian Ocean, West Indian Ocean, Australia, Japan, The Red Sea, Indonesia, East Pacific, and Central/West Pacific. Its natural habitat includes sandy substrates and rocky crevices in shallow coastal waters.
